Beyond Europe and the U.S., river cruising is a smaller world: a few ships per river, more land touring, and lines that specialize. This page lists the main options by region.

What Is Different Outside Europe

  • Fewer ships. On many of these rivers only a handful of vessels sail. Popular dates fill early.
  • More land. The cruise is often a week or less inside a longer land-and-river program. See our sister site River Cruise Voyages for combination trips.
  • Seasons matter more. Monsoons, dry seasons and flood seasons shape when and where ships can sail.
  • Health and entry rules. Visas and vaccinations vary by country. Check official government advice well before you travel.

Region by Region: Quick Notes

Egypt

Nile cruises usually sail between Luxor and Aswan, with Cairo before or after. The cooler months are the most comfortable for temple visits; summer is very hot.

Southeast Asia

Mekong ships sail between southern Vietnam and Cambodia. Water levels change through the year, and in the dry season some itineraries start or end by road.

India

Ganges cruises tend to be one part of a longer India program that includes the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

Southern Africa

On the Chobe, the boat is a floating safari lodge. Days are spent watching elephants, hippos and birds from the deck and from small tender boats.

South America

Amazon expedition ships use skiffs to reach narrow channels. Colombia’s Magdalena offers colonial towns and Caribbean-coast culture rather than rainforest.

Expedition or Comfort?

On the Amazon and in parts of Africa, the river is the attraction and the ship is a base for wildlife outings by skiff or safari vehicle. On the Nile and Mekong, ships are closer to floating hotels, with temples and towns as the focus. Expedition specialists are covered in more depth on our sister site River Cruise Expeditions.
